7 vital apps to get you through Christmas ☺☺☺

1. Entertain the family with Heads Up

It's not Christmas if there aren't a few moments of awkward silence as the relatives gather round, so it makes sense to be primed with a few family-friendly games to keep the conversation flowing (and to defuse those seasonal rows).
Obviously there are all kinds of games out there for Android and iOS but in terms of something that encourages everyone to get involved, Heads Up (Android/iOS) is definitely worth a download. It's no coincidence that it's based on a traditional party game anyway, and you only need one handset to play.
If that doesn't quite suit your family, there's always Words With Friends (Android/iOS) or the perennial favourite Draw Something (Android/iOS).
2. Keep in touch with GroupMe

You might not always be able to see friends and family over Christmas, which is where GroupMe (Android/iOS) comes in - as the name suggests, it's focused around group chatting, so it's perfect for small groups of relatives or friends, and you can easily share pictures, links, GIFs and YouTube clips in your conversations.
It works on the web too, if people don't want to install the app, and as an added bonus you can organise events through it as well. Obviously there's a pile of messaging apps you might prefer depending on what your family members already have installed, from WhatsApp (Android/iOS) to Google Hangouts (Android/iOS).
Use up leftovers with Allrecipes Dinner Spinner

Another common Christmas feeling - beyond peace and joy to all men - is wondering what you're going to do with a fridge full of leftovers.
Enter Allrecipes Dinner Spinner (Android/iOS), which lets you tap in the ingredients you've got available and find a dish to suit. There are other ways to search for recipes too, from dietary requirements (handy if you've got relatives round) to cooking time (handy if you're leaving for a Boxing Day walk in an hour).
There are many more recipe apps to choose from if you're doing some cooking this Christmas. Also recommended are BigOven (Android/iOS) and Yummly (Android/iOS).
Find something to watch with IMDB

You might well be spending large parts of the Christmas holiday slumped in front of the television, so how you do know what's good to watch? With the IMDB app (Android/iOS), that's how - movie and TV show ratings and details, at your fingertips.
With the IMDB app to hand you can stop the family from watching a real Christmas turkey in advance and instead direct them to something that's attracted far more critical acclaim. There's all sorts to explore within the app as well, including trailers for upcoming films, trivia about your favourite shows, and quick links to what's currently trending.
5. Sell your unwanted gifts with eBay

Been given the same Christmas jumper by different sides of the family? Looking to shift your old iPhone now you've found a new one under the tree? eBay (Android/iOS) can help you get your unwanted items up for sale quicker than you might think, and you can write listings and take photos right inside the app.
Even if you're an eBay novice, you should be able to get to grips with the app pretty quickly, and we've got you covered with comprehensive guides to the auction site too. There's also classifieds app Gumtree (Android/iOS), which may suit you better for larger items you're looking to get rid of locally.
6. Get home safely with Citymapper and Uber

Apple Maps and Google Maps can always get you home, but Citymapper (Android/iOS) outshines them both when it comes to public transport, especially if you find yourself in unfamiliar surroundings. Get it pre-loaded on your phone and make sure you return home safely after the office night out.
Another option is Uber (Android/iOS) - Christmas is the perfect time to sign up if you've not done so already. Make sure there's no chance of you thinking about drinking and driving and save yourself the trouble of hunting down a taxi in wintry conditions by calling one with a tap on your smartphone.

2017's Top 10 Most Anticipated Smartphones

1. Galaxy S8

The next top of the line Samsung is the most anticipated for a number of reasons. There are already a lot of rumors about the new Korean handset, and it looks like it should be something very innovative and futuristic. The front face should be almost completely occupied by the screen, with minimal edges around it. It is also expected that all versions of the S8 will have curved edges.
In hardware, there is no doubt that it will be one of the most powerful on the market. The camera should be even faster with PDAF Dual-Pixel focus technology. It has also been speculated the possibility of an optical digital reader embedded in the screen.
2. iPhone 8 or 7s

Although 2017 marks the tenth anniversary of the iPhone, Apple should only launch that smartphone from the third to the fourth quarter of next year. So the more concrete rumors and leaks are still very rare. What we have speculation at the moment are very bold things, which do not fit very well with Apple’s approach to smartphones.
There is the talk of a device with screen pretty much borders, as well as the S8 and Xiaomi Mi MIX, and no home button on the front. Something similar has already been commented on the S8 as well. In addition, as Apple managed to leave all the competition behind in question of hardware and performance this year with the iPhone 7, it is possible that this will be repeated next year as well. Finally, rumors about the possibility of the next iPhone having wireless charging are getting more intense, since Apple is supposed to swap the metal casing for a type of super-tough ceramic.
3. Google Pixel 2

Despite the releases of the major brands have generated millions of dollars in sales, the smartphone on which most talked in 2016 (within the sphere of technology) was certainly the Google Pixel. The tech giant Google came to put an end to its Nexus line which really has a great appeal for the markets where it’s being sold, and was compared by the international media as the only Android capable of surpassing the iPhone in quality in every aspect.
Though we still have no rumors about the next generation of this smartphone that has just been released, but we have some guesses about what to expect next year. As it is very likely that the next Pixel will also have the best camera ever seen on a mobile phone.
4. Nokia’s first Android Top-Of-The-Line

Rumors about Nokia’s return to the smartphone market have been popping up for years on the web. The brand has finally confirmed that it will do so in 2017, but the leaks that have hit the web so far seem to reveal that the brand only has one or two intermediate devices to launch soon.
But we believe that by the end of the year, the company will decide to launch a real top of the line Android. This device must have a very powerful hardware, in line with competitors of the year, and an optimized system. As it is a return of a brand dear enough by the fans of technology and by the general public, the supposed cell phone deserves a place in our list.
5. Moto Z2

Lenovo has reset the line that tops the catalog of the old Motorola with the launch of Moto Z and Z Play and all the modular concept of these devices. The manufacturer even promised that the modules that serve today in these phones will also serve in the next generations. It means, who enters this “platform” in 2016 will not have to buy new accessories in 2017.
So there is a lot of curiosity about how the manufacturer will handle this design limitation. In any case, the Moto Z2 should bring cutting-edge hardware, bold design and about 20 new modules for customers to buy.
6. LG G6

LG screwed up with the launch of G5, especially in Latin America, where the company has put on sale a version which is known as G5 SE. The smartphone sold poorly in India and abroad because its modular capabilities were very limited and well below what Lenovo presented.
That’s why LG, as a large and very capable smartphone maker, is expected to be able to rethink its top-

New YouTube update on PS4 adds PlayStation VR

A new version 1.09 YouTube update has added PlayStation Virtual Reality support reports The Verge. Reported by users on Reddit and Twitter and spotted by UploadVR, the news will enable PlayStation users with VR headsets to watch YouTube's collection of 360-degree videos inside PlayStation Virtual Reality.
There will also be a "normal version" to watch videos in a flatscreen version. Although PlayStation VR already has a large number of 360-degree video apps available in the PSN store, YouTube will offers users a greater amount of content. PSVR fans may have to wait a while however, although details are still yet to be confirmed, reports suggest that the new version is apparently being rolled out slowly.

You must be on WhatsApp for quite a while of your waking hours and you must be thinking you know all the secrets the social messaging app has bundled out in its app.

Insert tildes (~) on the either side of a word or phrase for ~strikethrough~

Chats > Broadcast Lists > New List > Add contacts

3. Share documents directly from iCloud Drive into a WhatsApp Chat

Press the upwards arrow which is on the left side of the text window > Share Document > select where to share a document from, including Google Drive and iCloud Drive.

If you are bad with remembering dates, it is now possible to create an event from the date mentioned in the chat

For those whose phones travel from one hand to another, you can now stop people from reading your WhatsApp chats.

6. Hide Chats from Conversation List

If you want to get a chat off your conversation window without deleting it altogether, hide it in Archive. Swipe left on a chat to hide that conversation.

7. Recover Deleted Chats

You will get all your chats, both deleted and undeleted, before the set default time.

8. Start or Read Chats through 3D Touch (iPhone 6s)

You can now directly start chatting from the home screen. Hold the WhatsApp icon on the screen and start the chat!

Whatsapp extends support for Blackberry, Nokia until June 2017

SAN FRANCISCO (Web Desk) – In a recent update, WhatsApp messenger has extended its support for BlackBerry OS, BlackBerry 10, Nokia S40 and Nokia Symbian S60 till June 30, 2017.
However; the messaging app will discontinue operations for other specified mobile devices.
In a February blog post, WhatsApp celebrated its seventh birthday and did a little early spring cleaning at the same time. In addition to announcing that it will end support for BlackBerry devices (all of them, including BlackBerry 10) the company also announced Nokia S40, Nokia Symbian S60, Android 2.1 and 2.2, Windows Phone 7.1 and iPhone 3GS/iOS 6 will also get the axe.
The devices “don’t offer the kind of capabilities we need to expand our app’s features in the future,” the blog posts says.
“This was a tough decision for us to make, but the right one in order to give people better ways to keep in touch with friends, family, and loved ones using WhatsApp.”
WhatsApp recommends users upgrade to a new device in order to continue using its messaging service.

Google’s Santa Claus Tracker app is live now and it is all kinds of fun

As the week of festivity is knocking at the door, and Christmas around the corner, people all around the globe will be eagerly waiting for Santa Claus and wonder what gifts he will bring. Global tech giant Google has rolled out its annual Santa Tracker app which will locate Santa, wherever he goes, this Christmas. The app provides games for children and they are directed towards raising the Christmas cheer. The Santa Tracker is an Android app and it makes you play as one of Santa helpers. On Christmas even, you can also locate Santa on the app, in places which he would visit.
Google will present a new game every day until Christmas and there are so many to find out in Santa’s village. Through an educator resource web page, teachers will be able to search for educational games as well as lesson plans which will make children celebrate the festival as well as learn. There is an official countdown for the time when Santa Claus will begin his journey. There are many things to learn too. This includes basic programming to learning trivia about different countries. Nokia India announces 5G, IoT services aimed at creating smart cities

Nokia Corp.’s India unit announced a slew of new 5G and Internet of Things (IoT) technology services that it plans to deploy in the country, mostly targeted at governments that can use the solutions to create smart cities and improve public safety.

The Finnish company showcased more than 60 different use-cases of these technologies at its annual Innovation Day in Bengaluru, including those that are already live and ready for use as well as ones that aren't live yet.

Nokia’s research and development office in Bengaluru, which has around 5,000 employees, creates solutions for both its Indian and international markets. Its new IoT range, though, will focus more on Indian clients, especially governments.

“5G and IoT are going to be the future trends that we see in the marketplace. While from an India standpoint it’s still an early stage for 5G to happen, IoT is taking a bit of a step forward in terms of adoption here,” Randeep Raina, chief technology officer for Nokia India said in an interview on Wednesday.

“There are certain initiatives led by the government right now in the form of digital India and smart city programs. IoT could be one of the enablers to make cities a bit safer and smarter. It’s with that intent that we’d put a theme out here on this innovation day,” he said.

The three main solutions, or use-cases, showcased by the company on Wednesday were video analytics of real-time city surveillance, a public safety service that can be deployed at railroad crossings and a smart parking service.

Based on real-time city surveillance via cameras deployed at various public locations Nokia’s IoT solution will be able to provide clients – mostly governments and policing authorities – with data analysis. The analysis includes everything from identifying anomalies, such as incorrect pedestrian crossings, to tracking traffic patterns.

Its public safety solution uses sensors, beacons and cameras and is aimed at keeping pedestrians from straying across the path of oncoming trains at railroad crossings. This service will both warn people crossing railroads on foot of an oncoming train as well as alert the authorities and issue notice of a fine in case people cross even after receiving a warning. The warning messages will appear on any device using any service provider and are not app-based, i.e. the user will not need to install an app to see the messages.

Nokia’s smart parking solution will target organized parking lots that can use it to fully automate the process - from identifying a car on entry and guiding the driver to free parking spots through an app, to recording the number of hours a car is parked at the lot and bill payment online via the app.

Roughly two months ago, auto components supplier Bosch Ltd also launched solutions targeted at creating smart cities, including a smart parking service that will help commuters find space in crowded areas. The German company has other similar solutions that are, again, aimed at assisting traffic policing and citizen safety and security systems.

Facebook Just Added An Extraordinary Feature To Its App

Facebook Just Added An Extraordinary Feature To Its App

If virtually all Facebook users connect from mobile, there are a number of limitations of the application for smartphones that is no longer valid. The company knows and has therefore begun to get rid of some, such as avoiding uploading videos in high definition.
As you know that frequently updated Facebook application for iOS and Android devices incorporating exciting new features. As echoes, the Android Police team, the Facebook for Android users can finally enjoy uploading videos in HD almost two years after iOS users.
Specifically, the new option of which I am speaking right now is available in the settings menu of the application (with the option of uploading in HD). Although the change would have begun to be available for a few weeks, it is now that seems to be available for all users of the application. This is an excellent news for many users, especially if we consider that the smartphones with Android can record in HD and 4K qualities for a long time.
Before starting to share this type of high-quality videos on social networks, keep in mind that this videos will have higher resolution, greater weight, or mega gigs and therefore those will also consume higher data. If you are not connected to a WiFi network, you better to have a good data rate. Otherwise, you may find an unpleasant surprise on the bill.
In addition to the above, the social media giant Facebook would be testing other developments in the app for Android. According to Android Police, the social network would be studying the reception of these developments with a small group of users.
One of the most striking is that of floating windows that allow continuing to view content thereof while use other applications or downloaded videos for viewing offline.
The decision to extend this feature to mobile devices responds to the strategy of Facebook, which wants to compete with YouTube in the video sector. So far, in recent months it has boosted the number of video views on its website, although it is not known how many of them have to do with the option to Play Automatically activated by default on smartphones.

WhatsApp Launches New Features To Revoke And Edit Sent Messages

According to the WABetaInfo account on Twitter, WhatsApp is reportedly testing new features for its app, one of which will add the ability to revoke and edit sent messages.WhatsApp is constantly testing new features to see how the world’s largest cross-platform messaging application could be of more use. The latest beta build of WhatsApp shows a rather interesting feature that could save a lot of unwanted embarrassment.
The option to edit a sent message is new to messaging apps, revoking a message after being delivered to the wrong person, not so much. BBM, BlackBerry's cross-platform instant messaging app, already allows users to retrieve sent messages from the recipients' phones.

SONY Z7 FULL REVIEW

The reveal of the Sony Xperia Z7 will once again be one of the most anticipated smartphones of the year, and the summer of 2017 will be the platform. Despite the fact there’s still plenty of time, we have some of the biggest revelations in what looks to be the seventh generation Xperia Z smartphone. With plenty of rumors in circulation, below we disclose all you need to know.

It doesn’t sound like Sony has any intentions on diminishing from mobile technology as earlier thought as fans from around the world are eager to see the best Sony Xperia Z smartphone yet. From what we’ve been hearing, the Xperia Z7 will pick up where the Z5 and Z6 left off introducing some amazing features that will once again shape the entire industry. As consumers look for more choices, new features, and the ability to do more for much less the Z7 looks as though it’ll have it all.
Below, we disclose all the latest rumors, specs, features, concept, price, preorder, and release date info on the 2017 Sony Xperia Z7 debut.

Sony Xperia Z7 Rumors

The biggest Sony Xperia Z7 rumors coincide with technological changes we’ll see over the coming years. As consumers make a push to have more choices to choose from, bigger options without having the added bulk, and more portability features packed in while not sacrificing price.

It sounds as though options won’t be a problem as we’re hearing three variants of the Z7 including a smaller, and more compact Mini, standard Z7, and Z7 Premium will all debut. A Z7 Mini is expected to cost less than the other two variants while still packing quite a punch. Outfitted with dual cameras, high end processor, HD resolution, and Google’s latest operating system out of the box.

The Z7 and Z7 Premium are likely to share similar specs and features including a robust front and back camera. Sony has done quite an amazing job over the years in introducing some amazing camera specs, and the same is expected in the 7th generation model. More megapixels, wide camera lens, optical image stabilization, auto laser focus, and something entirely new are all expected.

We’re also hearing the next generation technology including 3D features including both viewing and recording are expected. 3D smartphone technology is a long time coming, especially considering much of what we expect comes outfitted right in the palm of our hands. For game lovers, picture lovers, and those just wanting to surf the net can become a whole new experience of the Z7 features 3D technology.

While nothing has yet to be made official and we fully expect Sony to be tight-lipped on the upcoming Xperia Z7 it doesn’t stop us from disclosing what we’re already hearing, and what we want to see. We’ve been getting a lot of questions on the specs ad everything else packed into the Z7 which we’ve detailed below. For now, we’ll tell you much more, but don’t expect the official word on the launch to come until the 2017 summer straight from Japan.

Sony Xperia Z7 Specs
All details on the Sony Xperia Z7 specifications are detailed below.

Sony Xperia Z7 Features

The Xperia Z7 features are expected to bring out the best in the old, and bring out something entirely new. Some of the biggest enhancements rumored are a refined security system, expandable memory, and rapid wireless charging just to name a few.

It sounds as though the Z7 Mini will miss the mark on the retina eye scanner that we’re hearing will be packed into both the standard version and the Premium, but will come equipped with a fingerprint scanner. We’re thinking the reason behind this is the overall price, and to keep the Mini coming in much less than the two other variants it’s a necessary difference. Both will be comparable with other flagship 2017 smartphones with the gold standard becoming focused on eye sensing technology.

Rapid wireless charging could also be found onboard giving those on the go a more convenient option for charging. This will bode well for those with a newer car as many come standard with wireless charging technology. An improvement over current models could come in a much faster option with rapid charging wirelessly cutting down the amount of time up to 50%. We’ve yet to see this much quicker charging technology, and if anyone can do it it’s definitely Sony.

Sony Xperia Z7 Concept

We’re hoping Sony upgrades the outer body making the Xperia Z7 much more durable than the current model. One of the biggest disappointment consumers have noted in the past is the plastic surround instead of the stronger, and sleeker look of glass. The Xperia Z series has seen a glass outerbody, but a stronger, and much more durable concept is needed.

For those looking for a near-bezeless display will likely get just that in the Z7. From both viewing sides, top, and bottom, we’re hearing bezels will be almost non-existent. We’re unsure if this will be the same for the Z7 Mini, but it sounds like a foregone conclusion for both the Z7 and Z7 Premium. All three models are also expected to be correct for both right handed and left handed operation.

Also, the Premium version is expected to sit better in the hand making one handed operation with button control much easier than previous models of Sony’s version of the Phablet. This will be even more important as the Xperia Z7 Premium is being rumored to come in at 6.0 inches making it one of the largest flagship Phablets launching in 2017.

Sony Xperia Z7 Price

Sony’s intent on bringing back former consumers and maintaining current one’s can be seen with a much cheaper price tag than previous versions. If the current rumors are true, we can see a launch price of the standard Z7 coming in between the $600 – $700 range. The Mini will undoubtedly be the cheaper model with an expected price around $50 less than the standard while the much larger Premium will be slightly more.

One of the biggest competitors to the Xperia Z7 in 2017 will be the Xiaomi Mi7 which is rumored to launch during the summer also. Xiaomi has made a reputation of launching high-end handsets much cheaper than the competition which could be Sony’s drive to drop the launch prices of the Z7. Competition from stiff competitors is a go

iPhone 8 Dreaming in Full Swing

Apple's latest iPhone was barely out of the gate when rumors began percolating about the company's next new phone.

Although the iPhone 7 garnered mostly tepid reviews when it was released this summer, initial inventories sold out quickly, and the company had to scramble to meet demand.

That demand may have peaked, though, which may be why chasers of the next big thing are looking down the road.

"You can rest assured that next year being the 10th anniversary of the original iPhone, Apple will come out with something special," said Wayne Lam, principal analyst for telecom electronics at IHS Markit.

"Whether it's a completely new 10th anniversary model in conjunction with the regular iteration model of the iPhone 7, we'll have to find out -- but most likely, there will be drastic design innovation coming with the iPhones in 2017," he told TechNewsWorld.

"Historically, Apple likes to make a big deal out of decade-length anniversaries," observed Charles King, principal analyst at Pund-IT.

"Since 2017 marks the 10th anniversary of the iPhone, it's easy to assume the company will use the opportunity to prove that it hasn't lost a step, and continues to lead the industry in both design sophistication and delivering value to its customers," he told TechNewsWorld.

Block of Glass and Aluminum

Anticipation for the next model may be higher because the iPhone 7 failed to tick off many items on the wish lists of Apple fans.

"My impression is they were holding back on the 7, so they could make a whiz-bang splash on the 10th anniversary," said David McQueen, a research director at ABI Research.

The next iPhone will be Apple's vision of the smartphone of the future, he added.

"Long term, what the iPhone will be is a block of glass and aluminum with as few buttons, bumps and holes as it can have," McQueen told TechNewsWorld.

Apple may be taking a step toward that phone of the future with the display rumored for the next iPhone. It reportedly will be an OLED display that will occupy most of the front of the phone -- or all of it, by wrapping over its sides.

The OLED part of that rumor is a solid bet, maintained IHS' Lam.

"Apple's move to OLED display is all but assured through our supply-side intelligence," he said. "This opens up lots of design possibilities for them on next year's groundbreaking iPhone design."

Edge-to-Edge Screen

OLED screens have better contrast, brightness and deeper blacks than LCD displays, and they're also more flexible, which would allow Apple to create a curved phone with an edge-to-edge screen.

"I find the edge-to-edge display most credible," Patrick Moorhead, principal analyst at Moor Insights and Strategy, told TechNewsWorld.

Embracing OLED technology will help Apple keep pace with its competitors.

"Samsung has been doing curved OLED screens for years, so it's not a cutting-edge phenomenon by any stretch of the imagination," noted Bob O'Donnell, chief analyst at Technalysis Research.

"This is Apple just playing catch-up to other people," he told TechNewsWorld.

The beauty of the edge-to-edge screen is not expected to be marred by a home button or fingerprint reader. Both will be built into the screen itself, rumor has it.

"I'm particularly intrigued by the idea of a display-enabled fingerprint reader," Pund-IT's King said. "That could simplify both the phone design and authentication processes."

Glass Body

Some Apple watchers, including widely respected analyst Ming-Chi Kuo of KGI Securities, believe there will be three iPhone models: two conventional models with 4.7- and 5.5-inch displays, and one with an edge-to-edge rounded screen.

All of the units will have glass bodies to facilitate wireless charging.

Apple's wireless charging is expected to be truly wireless. Existing wireless chargers require a phone to be placed on the charger. Apple's charger will charge a phone through the air for short distances.

"Wireless charging that requires no contact would be a technology innovation," Techna

Refracta 8.0 Is a Pint-Sized Powerhouse

Refracta is a somewhat obscure Linux distribution that offers exceptional functionality and stability.

Obscurity is not always a bad thing when it comes to Linux distros. You can find some very worthwhile alternatives to your current operating system. Refracta is a big surprise in a small package.

Many look-alike desktop distros are difficult to distinguish from run-of-the-mill garden varieties. Others offer new adopters something unique that makes using them fun and productive.

Refracta is one of the few full-service Linux distros that makes an easy and more convenient replacement for pocket Linux options such as Puppy Linux. Not all Linux distros that install to a USB drive -- and have the ability to save files and system settings in a persistent mode -- work equally well.

Doing just that has been the rallying point around Puppy Linux-based variants, but Puppy Linux requires adjusting to a different set of computing tools and a few less-conventional operating procedures.

Refracta is not a Puppy Linux family member, but it just works. When I run Refracta with full persistence from a USB drive, my user experience is much like running it in a virtual machine or even a full hard drive installation.

In its portable Linux option running from a USB drive, Refracta offers a far superior user experience than the Live session CD, with its limitations and slow speed. Refracta can be an ideal computing solution to place on your everyday computer, as well as carry in your pocket as a portable Linux desktop you can plug into any computer.

Refracta Basics

Refracta 8.0, released late this summer, is a Linux distribution based on Devuan Jesse GNU+Linux, a systemd-free fork of Debian.

Its primary design targets home computer users looking for a simple and familiar layout using the Xfce desktop. It also is a handy problem solver when used as a system rescue-and-recovery disk.

The Xfce 4.10 desktop is the ideal choice for this full-service Linux distro. Xfce is less demanding on hardware so it runs reliably on a wider range of both new and legacy computers. You often find lightweight or stripped-down Linux distros running lightweight desktop options like Xfce, LxLe, JWM or Openbox. Xfce is one of the more flexible and customizable desktop options.

The pairing of the Xfce desktop with a Devuan Jesse base is a great combination. There is nothing lightweight about Refracta Linux's ability to provide heavy duty performance without the overhead of desktops such as Cinammon or KDE or even GNOME.

If you like what Refracta offers but still yearn for another desktop environment replacement, however, you can turn Refracta into another desktop flavor. You can get other desktop environments and additional software packages from the Devuan package repository.

The Refracta project includes a collection of useful tools not usually found in Linux distros, such as refractainstaller, refractasnapshot and refracta2usb. They make it much easier to customize the installation or to create a custom live CD or live USB image. These tools will work on most Debian or Devuan-based systems.

This distro's support is limited to i386 and x86_64 Architecture. If your computer is 32-bit, you will not be able to sample the live CD version, let alone install it.

What's Inside

Refracta focuses on providing common applications and services that most users will need instead of trying to accommodate more specialized uses. It delivers a basic desktop with simple applications that are easy to use.

The default installation includes several Internet applications; graphic, multimedia and office software; and various system tools and utilities. The default Web browser is Firefox ESR (Extended Support Release). The office suite is a combination of the AbiWord for word processing and Gnumeric for spreadsheets. One of the best IDE/text editors, Geany, is included as well.

Version 8.0 uses Devuan repositories for packages and relies on the Synaptic Package Manager for other software additions/removals. The installed packages and the desktop environment (xfce-4.10) are relatively unchanged from the previous few versions of Refracta.

Look and Feel

Refracta has the familiar look and feel that is most associated with classic Linux. The panel bar sits at the top of the screen. The virtual workspace switcher is active by default and is preset to four desktops.

The desktop itself is uncluttered. You can not place application icons on the desktop. The menu has no favorites bar for quick-launching often-used programs.

Still, Xfce lets you right-click anywhere on the desktop to open a complete menu display. Plus, you can add applets to the panel bar to place more tools just one icon-click away.

The panel bar settings and the full range of desktop settings and system settings give you ample options to alter Refracta's appearance to your needs.

Bottom Line

The live session CD is protected by a default password. Plus, you can run root commands in live session -- use the 'su' command.

The root password is the word 'root.' The user password is the word 'user.'

When running from live media, you can use 'sudo ' for root permissions or use 'sudo -i' to get a root terminal.

Refracta is a no-nonsense Linux distro that delivers speed and reliability. It is still a bit of a rarity, in that not too many distros have jumped on the Devuan instead of Debian fork wagon.

If you want the ease of use that the Xfce desktop provides, and if you want the ability to run a full-service Linux desktop from a USB drive and store all of your files along with the OS, Refracta is a winning Linux distro.

Correct' use of Facebook may help you live longer:

Using Facebook may help you live longer, but only when it serves to maintain and enhance your real-world social ties, a new study of over 12 million social media users has found.
The research confirms what scientists have known for a long time about the offline world: People who have stronger social networks live longer. It documents for the first time that what happens online may matter too.
"Interacting online seems to be healthy when the online activity is moderate and complements interactions offline," said William Hobbs, doctoral student at University of California San Diego at the time of the study.
"It is only on the extreme end, spending a lot of time online with little evidence of being connected to people otherwise, that we see a negative association," said Hobbs, now a postdoctoral fellow at Northeastern University.
"Happily, for almost all Facebook users, what we found is balanced use and a lower risk of mortality," said James Fowler, professor at UC San Diego.
The researchers matched California Facebook users with vital records from the California Department of Public Health.
They studied counts of online activity over six months, comparing the activity of those still living to those who had died.
Your Facebook posts may indicate your mental well being: Research
All of those studied were born between 1945 and 1989, and all the comparisons were made between people of similar age and gender.
The first finding is that those who are on Facebook live longer than those who are not.
In a given year, an average Facebook user is about 12% less likely to die than someone who does not use the site.
Among people who do use Facebook, the researchers looked at numbers of friends, numbers of photos and status updates, numbers of wall posts sent and messages sent, to see if people who were more active lived longer.
In these comparisons, they controlled their analysis not only for age and gender but also relationship status, length of time on Facebook, and smartphone use (a proxy for income).
People with average or large social networks, in the top 50% to 30%, lived longer than those in the lowest 10 -- a finding consistent with classic studies of offline relationships and longevity.
Facebook can be a menace at workplace: Report
Those on Facebook with highest levels of offline social integration - as measured by posting more photos, which suggests face-to-face social activity - have the greatest longevity.
Online-only social interactions, like writing wall posts and messages, showed a nonlinear relationship: Moderate levels were associated with the lowest mortality.
Since the researchers were studying an online social network, they could also look at the direction of friendship requests.
It was Facebook users who accepted the most friendships who lived the longest. There was no observable relationship for those who initiated the most.
